Model, Zoetrope

Installed 2017–18, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Cape Town, South Africa

“Commissioned by Design Indaba to make a solar-powered charging station for an electric vehicle, I conceived a zoetrope based on the Japanese network of Michi-no-Eki—roadside stations that offer local insights, performances, and produce. The interior of the zoetrope contained a sequence of filmic haikus made by local South African filmmakers. The installation expressed the geographic and demographic range of life within a 100-kilometer radius of the Zeitz museum—from an underwater kelp forest and rooftop football match to choral groups and solar-power installers.”
