Introduction
Building Home
In the United States, the long-standing dominance of single-family housing construction has informed conventional ideas of what constitutes a home. The in-progress initiatives in “Building Home” present alternative models that demonstrate how architects today are working collaboratively to expand and redefine home to embrace community spaces, cooperative living, land stewardship, caregiving, and historic preservation. These large-scale explorations utilize building typologies grounded in regional histories and cultural specificity, while proposing solutions that address urgent contemporary issues such as housing insecurity, environmental advocacy, cultural memory, and aging.
