It is estimated that one quart of oil is needed to produce one carpet swatch, and more than 700,000 carpet swatches (or 500 tons) end up in U.S. landfills every year. The founders of Tricycle created Tryk in 2007 to provide an alternative to swatches for the design industry. Tryk is a sampling tool that reduces waste from the very beginning of the design process, as the sample never has to be physically manufactured. Instead, the program produces realistic carpet images using proprietary digital technology that mimics the tufting and weaving processes. Tryk significantly expands an existing program by allowing a greater range of swatches to include woven carpets, wallcoverings, and fabrics, and has greatly improved image quality to be more photorealistic. In addition, Tryk includes a Web platform that is customizable for each client and offers features such as life-size modular tile prints and four simultaneous views of possible installations that integrate the carpet into an interior.
